We all purchase a pet because we like them so much.
Once in the house you quickly fall in love with your four-legged friend and yours is of course the cutest. Unfortunately there is a lot involved in the purchase, such as of course education, the supplies you need for a cat, but the most important thing is health.
We all hope that our sweet cats are and stay core healthy, but unfortunately like humans, many cat diseases occur. In this blog, we highlight one. Cat disease FVR.
This cat disease FVR (feline viral rhinotracheitis) is one of the most common cat diseases out there.
It is especially very important that you don't let the name fool you, not every cat
with this disease has sneezing as a symptom.
FVR is more common in cats that live in large groups, think shelter,
Cattery or cozy house full of cats. But again don't mislead yourself because
ordinary house cats can also get this disease.
Cats with reduced resistance have a higher chance, as do cats that have not been
vaccinated or older cats.
The feline herpesvirus is a co-causer of the symptoms of FVR disease, which usually
leads to potentially life-threatening disease symptoms.
Usually cats make a full recovery, however, recovery can take several weeks. Sometimes
a cat is left with permanent damage, such as excessive sneezing, sinusitis,
chronic rhinitis, damaged mucous membranes.
Treatment with antibiotics then offers temporary improvement of the remaining symptoms.
To make sure that your cat has this disease you will of course visit your veterinarian,
they will look at the symptoms and then do a laboratory test by taking some
oral mucosa with a swab (cotton swab) and sending it in.
Treatment for this disease will include antibiotics to prevent further infections and
perhaps medication to make the mucus a little tougher so your cat can breathe
easier throughout.
It is important that you also support the cat at home, most cats have a lesser
appetite. You can make the food extra attractive by warming it up, this will
enhance the smell. If the cat really doesn't want to eat at all, you can always
try to give liquid food by syringe, make sure the cat doesn't choke. In extreme
cases the cat can be taken to the vet and will get extra support through an
infusion.
You can carefully clean the effusions yourself, for example by boiling water, let it
cool down and clean the eyes and nose with a clean kitchen paper, this way it
will be more pleasant for the cat. Do not let it accumulate, this can be
painful for the cat.
Of course, it is also important to clean the scratching post and other favorite places. To
prevent further or re-infection. Make sure you clean the scratching post with a
clean microfiber cloth and lukewarm/warm water. Preferably do not use cleaning
products, if you do want to use something, use a natural cleaner that is not
toxic to your cat.

There is no real prevention against the FVR disease. The only thing you can do is to
vaccinate your cat on a regular basis. Your cat can still get this FVR disease,
however, more often in a milder and more treatable form.
